YOUTH SERVICES REPORT

November 10th, 2021

This month’s SWAYS meeting was held at Glen Carbon Centennial Library, with 14 attending in person, and one via ZOOM.   The October minutes were approved. Erica H. mentioned the IRead theme for this summer - Read Beyond the Beaten Path. The IRead store is open, and delivery is guaranteed for March, when ordering by December, and April when ordered by January.

The majority of the meeting from that point was spent in discussing summer reading entertainers. Some of the performers we discussed included: Science Tellers, Mad Science (last year), Mike Anderson - the Ukulele Guy, St. Louis Zoo, 4H Kids, Dino O’Dell (last year), Animal Tales, Wild Times Exotics, Stage Play, Tie Dyed Iguana, Mini Horses from Heartland Therapy, Serengeti Steve, Bat Lady, Treehouse Wildlife Center, Incredible Bats, the Missouri DNR, Wild Hearts - music and singing, Lynn Levi the Raptor Guy, Juggling Jeff - comedy, juggling, magic; Fred and His Feathered Friends - family run bird show with rescued Macaws, Chef Bananas - foam party, Glen Foster Magic (last year), Will Stuck, and Swords and Roses - acting troupe does interactive shows.

It was decided that the December meeting will be held in person at the Freeburg Library on December 8th, with a potluck. Traditionally, this is the meeting in which members contribute their Top Ten List of favorite books from 2021. There was a quick discussion on Story time activities, whether to include singing or not. Some people play games as well as crafts. Some people play GoNoodle songs in the background on YouTube.

The most recent reading challenge at the East Alton Library, a Halloween Quick Challenge, has ten patrons sign up, with seven children completing the challenge. The next challenge is being planned for December 1st to December 31st. Preschool Story time is returning soon, with Elementary to follow. I have two books and craft activities planned so far, with more in the works.

Submitted by Becky Retzer.
